Weather: Partly cloudy. High of 86. Wind E 12-16 mph, gusting to 20 mph. Round two resumed at 6:58 a.m. and concluded at 8:02 a.m. The third round will feature threesomes off No. 1 between from 8:30 a.m. – 12:50 p.m. 

Cut: 71 professionals and one amateur at 4-under 140 from a field of 127 professionals and five amateurs. Jackson Van Paris, the lone amateur to make the cut, made par at his final hole (No. 9) for a 2-under 70 to make the cut on the number.

  • In his sixth start of his PGA TOUR rookie season, Lakewood, Washington native was 6-under through 15 holes in round two, 13-under total, when play was called for the day Friday (darkness); played his remaining three holes (Nos. 7-9) Saturday morning in par-birdie-par to sign for a 7-under 65
  • In eight career TOUR starts before this week, his best position through 36 holes was T10 at the 2024 Farmers Insurance Open (finished T33); the Torrey Pines result also stands as his as his best TOUR finish
  • Posted back-to-back top-3 finishes to finish in the top 30 of the 2023 Korn Ferry Tour Points List and earn his PGA TOUR rookie status for this season  
  • If not otherwise exempt, the winner of this week’s Puerto Rico Open earns a spot into next week’s PLAYERS Championship field, as well as other select events 

Miscellaneous Notes 

  • On the heels of a first-round 5-under 67, 26-year-old German Matti Schmid (T2/-12) improved with a bogey-free 7-under 65 in Friday’s second round; in his only previous Puerto Rico Open start, finished T33 in 2023; comes into the week after a start to the season defined by six starts and six missed cuts
  • Making his fifth start in the Puerto Rico Open and first since 2013, after signing for a 7-under 65 in round one Friday morning, Kevin Streelman (T2/-12) backed it up with a 5-under 67 in round two to reach 12-under 132; Puerto Rico Open history: 2008/MC, 2010/T3, 2012/MC and 2013/MC; seeks a third career PGA TOUR win: 2013 Valspar Championship, 2014 Travelers Championship
  • Following a first-round 7-under 65, taking until Friday morning to complete due to Thursday storms, San Juan’s  Rafa Campos (T2/-12) turned around to post a 5-under 67 in round two and reach 12-under 132; three top-10s in 14 starts in the event (T8/2016, T10/2017, T3/2021); best of 58 TOUR starts: T2/2021 Corales Puntacana Championship
  • Competing on the PGA TOUR this season by virtue of finishing inside the top 10 in the 2023 DP World Tour Eligibility Ranking, Ryo Hisatune (T2/-12) followed an opening-round bogey-free 7-under 65 with a bogey-free 5-under 67 in round two; is the only player bogey-free through 36 holes
  • Making his first start of the season and eighth in the Puerto Rico Open, Brice Garnett (T2/-12) opened with matching 6-under 66s to reach 12-under 132; 12-under through 36 holes falls one shy of his lowest on TOUR; opened with 63-68 at the 2018 Corales Puntacana Championship to reach 13-under; won the event by four strokes
  • Seeking to become the first player to successfully defend a Puerto Rico Open title, Nico Echavarria (T15/-9) opened in 68-67 to reach 9-under 135; only Michael Bradley (2009, 2011) has won the event more than once
  • Making his second start in the Puerto Rico Open (T2/2019), Daniel Berger followed a bogey-free 3-under 69 in round one with a 1-over 73 in Friday’s second round to miss the cut
