Con nueva junta directiva y plan de modernización
San Juan Puerto Rico – El Coro de Niños de San Juan (CNSJ) celebrará su 60° aniversario en noviembre del 2026. Por tal razón, el Coro comenzará este mes en el conteo regresivo de un año para celebrar seis décadas de excelencia musical, formación artística y de orgullo cultural para Puerto Rico ante el mundo. Para iniciar esta conmemoración, la organización presentó hoy a su nueva Junta Directiva y comenzó a trabajar en un plan para modernizar sus instalaciones y fortalecer su misión educativa.
Con la formación de su nueva Junta Directiva, el Coro se prepara para iniciar una nueva etapa de crecimiento y renovación institucional. Este equipo de líderes comprometidos con el arte y la educación está compuesto por Naji Khoury como presidente, Manuel Calderón como vicepresidente, Nelson Colón, CPA como tesorero, Juliana Pagán como secretaria, y los directores Robyn Weber, Luis Álvarez, Lic. Camelia Garrido, Griselle Bou, Vangie Bogaty y Tomás Dardet, APR.
“Celebrar los 60 años del Coro de Niños de San Juan es un honor inmenso y profundamente emotivo. Durante las pasadas dos décadas he tenido el privilegio de presidir una institución que ha formado generaciones de jóvenes puertorriqueños a través de la música, la disciplina y el amor por nuestro país”, dijo Khoury. Este aniversario no solo celebra nuestra historia, sino también el futuro vibrante que seguimos construyendo juntos”.
Otra de las iniciativas que se trabajará para el aniversario es un plan integral de renovación de la sede del Coro, ubicada en la histórica escuela Rosendo Matienzo Cintrón en Santurce. Este proyecto busca transformar el espacio en un centro educativo y artístico moderno, que sea funcional e inspirador para sus estudiantes y maestros.
“Sesenta años representan mucho más que una celebración; son el reflejo de una trayectoria marcada por la excelencia, la pasión y el compromiso con nuestra niñez y con la música puertorriqueña”, dijo María Gabriela Fernández, directora artística del Coro de Niños de San Juan. “Este aniversario es un nuevo comienzo, una oportunidad para evolucionar, innovar y seguir desarrollando el legado del Coro de Niños de San Juan hacia las próximas generaciones. También es un agradecimiento a todas las familias que han sido parte del Coro de Niños de San Juan, y a todos los niños y jóvenes que han prestado sus voces para cantar, llevar alegría y llenar los corazones del público en estos 60 años de trayectoria”.
Este esfuerzo de modernización reafirma el compromiso del Coro con el desarrollo de nuevas generaciones de músicos y con la preservación del patrimonio cultural de Puerto Rico. Este también busca asegurar que su legado continúe evolucionando con excelencia y relevancia por los próximos 60 años.
Desde su fundación en 1966 por Evy Lucío Córdova, el CNSJ ha crecido de un pequeño coro de 14 niñas a una escuela con más de 130 estudiantes entre los 5 y 18 años, ofreciendo entrenamientos en teoría musical, técnica vocal e instrumentos como guitarra, cuatro, flauta y handbells. Reconocido por UNESCO en el 2013 como patrimonio cultural, histórico y social de Puerto Rico y designado por la Legislatura de Puerto Rico como Embajadores Internacionales de Buena Voluntad en el 1994, el coro ha recorrido los escenarios del mundo, incluyendo Carnegie Hall, Royal Albert Hall, Kennedy Center y Wiener Musikverein. El coro fue distinguido en el Rimini International Choral Competition 2014 en Italia, donde Fernández-Cerra recibió el premio de Mejor Directora.
El Coro de Niños de San Juan ha sido cuna de grandes talentos puertorriqueños que hoy representan a la Isla en los escenarios musicales más importantes del mundo. Entre ellos se encuentran el cantante Luis Fonsi; la soprano Meechot Marrero, reconocida internacionalmente por su trayectoria en la ópera y sus interpretaciones en la Deutsche Oper Berlin; la actriz y artista escénica Shadia Fairuz Almasri, integrante del elenco de Sing Street en Broadway; y Stephanie Mercado Muñiz, cantante y flautista del grupo Atención Atención.

The Coro de Ninos de San Juan begins its 60th anniversary celebration with a new Board of Directors and modernization plan
San Juan Puerto Rico (November 3, 2025) – The Coro de Niños de San Juan (CNSJ) will celebrate its 60th anniversary in November 2026. To mark the beginning of this milestone, the choir is kicking off a yearlong countdown celebrating six decades of musical excellence, artistic training, and cultural pride for Puerto Rico and the world. As part of the commemoration, the organization introduced its new Board of Directors and announced plans to modernize its facilities and strengthen its educational mission.
With the formation of its new Board of Directors, the choir enters a new stage of institutional growth and renewal. This team of leaders, committed to the arts and education, is composed of Naji Khoury as president, Manuel Calderón as vice president, Nelson Colón, CPA as treasurer, Juliana Pagán as secretary, and board members Robyn Weber, Luis Álvarez, Lic. Camelia Garrido, Griselle Bou, Vangie Bogaty, and Tomás Dardet, APR.
“Celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Coro de Niños de San Juan is an immense and deeply emotional honor. For the past two decades, I have had the privilege of leading an institution that has shaped generations of Puerto Rican youth through music, discipline, and love for our country,” said Khoury. “This anniversary not only celebrates our history, but also the vibrant future we continue to build together.”
Another key initiative for this milestone is a comprehensive renovation plan for the choir’s headquarters, located in the historic Rosendo Matienzo Cintrón School in Santurce. The project seeks to transform the space into a modern educational and artistic center, functional, inspiring, and designed to serve the needs of both students and teachers.
“Sixty years represent much more than a celebration; they reflect a journey marked by excellence, passion, and commitment to our children and Puerto Rican music,” said María Gabriela Fernández, artistic director of the Coro de Niños de San Juan. “This anniversary is a new beginning, an opportunity to evolve, innovate, and continue developing the legacy of the Coro de Niños de San Juan for generations to come. It is also a way to honor all the families who have been part of our history, and every child and young person who has lent their voice to bring joy and touch hearts throughout these 60 years.”
This modernization effort reaffirms the choir’s commitment to nurturing new generations of musicians and preserving Puerto Rico’s cultural heritage. It also ensures that its legacy continues to grow with excellence and relevance for the next 60 years.
Since its founding in 1966 by Evy Lucío Córdova, the CNSJ has grown from a small choir of 14 girls into a music school with more than 130 students between the ages of 5 and 18. The institution offers training in music theory, vocal technique, and instruments such as guitar, cuatro, flute, and handbells. Recognized by UNESCO in 2013 as a cultural, historical, and social heritage of Puerto Rico and designated by the Legislature of Puerto Rico in 1994 as International Goodwill Ambassadors, the choir has performed on some of the world’s most prestigious stages, including Carnegie Hall, Royal Albert Hall, Kennedy Center, and Wiener Musikverein. In 2014, the choir was honored at the Rimini International Choral Competition in Italy, where Fernández-Cerra received the award for Best Director.
The Coro de Niños de San Juan has been the cradle of great Puerto Rican talents who today represent the island on the world’s most prominent stages. Among them are singer Luis Fonsi; soprano Meechot Marrero, internationally recognized for her opera career and performances with the Deutsche Oper Berlin; actress and performer Shadia Fairuz Almasri, cast member of Sing Street on Broadway; and Stephanie Mercado Muñiz, singer and flutist with the children’s group Atención Atención.
