Los primeros respondedores en Puerto Rico y las Islas Vírgenes Estadounidenses tienen comunicación móvil de banda ancha confiable con FirstNet, la red de banda ancha de seguridad pública del país.
San Juan, Puerto Rico — Liberty y el equipo de FirstNet® de AT&T llevaron a cabo pruebas de la red de FirstNet, además de sitios celulares portátiles destacados en la Isla de la flota dedicada de FirstNet y el nuevo mini Compact Rapid Deployable (miniCRD™), que está disponible para que las agencias lo compren y autodesplieguen para obtener capacidades de respuesta rápidas y continuas. Trabajando en estrecha colaboración con AT&T, Liberty está ayudando a garantizar que los primeros en responder y las agencias de seguridad pública en Puerto Rico y las Islas Vírgenes Estadounidenses tengan las comunicaciones interoperables que necesitan, sin importar la emergencia.
El simulacro se llevó a cabo con representantes de Liberty y FirstNet, además de agencias de seguridad y manejo de emergencias estatales y federales.
“Esta prueba es bien importante para nosotros. Si tenemos que enfrentar una situación de emergencia en Puerto Rico o las Islas Vírgenes Estadounidenses, podemos proveer apoyo de comunicación a nuestros primeros respondedores para que ellos puedan enfocarse de lleno en sus trabajos”, dijo Victor Vera, director de ingeniería de redes de acceso radioeléctrico de Liberty. “El tener el equipo de FirstNet físicamente en Puerto Rico también quiere decir que podemos hacer el despliegue mucho más rápido para asegurar la conectividad dedicada para los primeros respondedores”.
Wilfredo Pereira, consultor senior principal para el programa de FirstNet en Puerto Rico y las Islas Vírgenes Estadounidenses y el Grupo de Operaciones de Respuesta FirstNet de AT&T, presentó las soluciones desplegables de FirstNet. Además de hablar sobre el nuevo miniCRD, que consiste en dos maletas reforzadas ultraportátiles del tamaño aproximado de equipaje, los asistentes aprendieron más sobre los recursos de FirstNet disponibles en caso de emergencia. Estos incluyen antenas celulares móviles en tierra, como los Satellite Cell on Light Trucks (SatCOLT) y los CRD. Estos activos se conectan a FirstNet vía satélite y no dependen de la disponibilidad de energía comercial, lo que los hace ideales para su uso durante emergencias en zonas rurales y remotas, así como en zonas donde las comunicaciones pueden no estar disponibles temporeramente, como en misiones de búsqueda y rescate o después de un huracán de gran intensidad. Con cobertura en cualquier lugar, los suscriptores de FirstNet tendrán conectividad dedicada en Banda 14 dondequiera que la necesiten.
Pereira dijo que el nuevo equipo hace una diferencia sustancial en términos de preparación comparado con el periodo luego del impacto del huracán María en el 2017. También mencionó que el tener los miniCRD portátiles en Puerto Rico es significativo porque esto facilita el despliegue del servicio para los primeros respondedores en localidades remotas.
“Este equipo es utilizado para emergencias. Cualquier participante de FirstNet puede pedir el despliegue de este servicio completamente libre de costo”, Pereira explicó. “Están disponibles aquí en Puerto Rico y no tenemos que esperar a que sean trasportados desde otra localidad, lo que hace una gran diferencia durante un desastre natural o cualquier situación en la que se necesita un despliegue rápido de comunicación de emergencia”.
Liberty fue seleccionada por AT&T para ayudar a apoyar el despliegue de FirstNet — la única red construida con y para los primeros respondedores— en Puerto Rico y las Islas Vírgenes Estadounidenses y está comprometida a apoyar las necesidades de telecomunicaciones móviles de los primeros respondedores. FirstNet está diseñada para todos los primeros respondedores y para aquellos que son críticos para apoyar su respuesta de emergencia. Liberty and FirstNet, built with AT&T, test innovative equipment
Puerto Rico and USVI first responders have reliable, mobile broadband communications with FirstNet, the nation’s public safety broadband network.
San Juan, Puerto Rico — August 12, 2024 — Liberty and the FirstNet® team at AT&T carried out tests of the FirstNet network, as well as spotlighted on-island portable cell sites from the dedicated FirstNet fleet and the new mini Compact Rapid Deployable (miniCRD™), which is available for agencies to purchase and self-deploy for fast and continued response capabilities. Working in close collaboration with AT&T, Liberty is helping ensure first responders and public safety agencies in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands (USVI) have the interoperable communications they need, no matter the emergency.
The drill was conducted with representatives from AT&T and Liberty, in addition to territory and federal law enforcement and emergency response agencies.
“This test is very important to us. If we have to face an emergency situation in Puerto Rico or in the USVI, we can provide communication support to our first responders so they can focus fully on their jobs,” said Victor Vera, director of Radio Access Network Engineering at Liberty. Having FirstNet equipment on site in Puerto Rico also means that we can make the deployment faster to provide dedicated connectivity for first responders.”
Wilfredo Pereira, senior principal consultant for the FirstNet Program in Puerto Rico and the USVI, and the FirstNet Response Operations Group (ROG) at AT&T presented the FirstNet deployable solutions. In addition to discussing the new miniCRD, which is comprised of two ultra-portable ruggedized cases that are each about the size of checked luggage, attendees learned more about the FirstNet assets available to them in the event of an emergency. This includes on-island mobile cell sites like Satellite Cell on Light Trucks (SatCOLTs) and CRDs. These assets link to FirstNet via satellite and do not rely on commercial power availability, making them ideal for use during emergencies in rural and remote areas, as well as areas where communications may be temporarily unavailable, such as search and rescue missions or after a major hurricane. With on-the-go coverage, FirstNet subscribers will have dedicated Band 14 connectivity wherever it’s needed.
Pereira noted that the new equipment makes a substantial difference in terms of preparedness compared to the aftermath of Hurricane Maria in 2017. He also noted that having this equipment in Puerto Rico is significant because it provides reliable connectivity for first responders in hard-to-reach locations.
“This equipment is used during emergencies. Any public safety agency on FirstNet can request the deployment of assets from the FirstNet fleet at no additional charge,” Pereira explained. “They are available here in Puerto Rico and we don’t have to wait for them to be transported from another location, which makes a big difference during a natural disaster or any situation in which you need rapid emergency communication deployment.”
